Firefox 3 Downloaded Over 8 Million Times In One Day

The latest version of the very popular Mozilla Firefox browser was downloaded 8,349,074 times between 2:16 p.m. ET Tuesday and 2:16 p.m. ET Wednesday. By comparison Firefox 2 was downloaded only 1.6 million times in the first 24 hours of its release. As part of the initial release, Mozilla hoped to break the Guinness World record for the most software download in 24 hours. However, since as of yet this type of record does not exist, the decision is really whether Guinness believes the event is worthy of being included. Because of interest in the browser Mozilla’s servers were crippled on Tuesday postponing the US release by roughly two hours, while the European release was delayed an hour.

Mozilla Firefox 3 Beta 4 Released

Mozilla has released the 4th public beta version of Firefox 3. Here are a few of the updates packed into Firefox 3 beta 4:

  • Full page zoom - Up until now, Firefox would let you make text larger or smaller, but there was no way to increase or decrease the size of all the content on a web site (something you’ve been able to do with Opera for years). Now you can choose whether the zoom feature works for text or full pages.
  • New download manager - The new download manager shows active time remaining, and the status of downloads. You can also search your downloads and see the site where your downloaded files are from.
  • Improved OS integration - Firefox 3 beta 4 includes specific icons and themes for Windows Vista, OS X, and Linux (using the native GTK theme).
  • Improved memory usage

Firefox 3 beta 4 also includes a ton of other tweaks and bug fixes described in the release notes. You can try it here

Firefox Updates Again

FirefoxJust four days after releasing version 2.0.0.10 of Firefox 2.0 to fix six known bugs, browser developers at Mozilla Corp. had to scramble push out another update — version 2.0.0.11 — to fix a new bug that caused problems when the browser was rendering “canvas” HTML elements. The latest version was released on Friday, marking the first time Mozilla has issued to updates to the popular open-source browser in one week.

Version 2.0.0.10 was released last Monday.

The most recent canvas problems were detailed last week by Mozilla, which said at the time it expected to have an updated version out by last Friday.

Canvas elements, which were first used by Apple Inc. in its Safari browser, allow Web site designers to dynamically render bitmap images in HTML. Firefox, Safari and Opera support Canvas natively; Microsoft Corp.’s Internet Explorer does so with a plug-in.

All editions of Firefox 2.0.0.10 — for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux — break pages that include the Canvas element, and cripple at least two Firefox extensions, FoxSaver and Fotofox.

The new version of Firefox is available for free download on the Mozilla Web site.
